  • Notes
    • 111162. Johann Adam Stoltz, born 11 April 1786 at Kutzenhausen. Johann Adam Stoltz married Maria Eva Jordi (sometimes spelled Jordy) 7 July 1807 at Kutzenhausen, Alsace (Bas-Rhin), France. Johann Adam and Maria Eva (Jordi) Stoltz and their children left Kutzenhausen in 1828 and came to America and became one of the many pioneer families that settled in Wabash County, Illinois.
Johann Adam Stoltz lived at Kutzenhausen, Elsass-Lothringen, Germany. He was a shepherd. People who made a living off the land were called agriculturists and herdsmen. The agriculturist was a grain farmer. He also had fruit trees, vegetable gardens, milk cows and goats, pigs, chickens, geese, and ducks. The herdsmen specialized in the raising of animals. He, too, would have fruit trees, vegetable gardens and fowls at his home in town where he lived. Adam was a shepherd or raiser of sheep and perhaps some goats. He rented his land from the peasants. There were no fences so the animals had to be kept together while grazing. In the evening the animals would be corraled in a portable pferch, meaning ‘shut in tightly together’. The next evening the pferch would be moved to a new location adjacent to the preceding night’s location. By this method the land was organically fertilized.
